    1. Alberta: Working Parents Benefit

To support taxpayers who have incurred child care expenses so they can continue to work during the pandemic, the Government of Alberta is providing the Working Parents Benefit, which is a one-time payment of $561 per child.

Taxpayers who meet the eligibility criteria have from March 1 until March 31, 2021, to apply for the benefit. Please consult the following site for more information: https://www.alberta.ca/working-parents-benefit.aspx

Tax implications on the 2020 income tax return

The benefit is not taxable. However, if the taxpayer or their spouse claims child care expense deduction on their 2020 income tax return, they are required to deduct the Working Parent Benefit they received in 2021 from the child care expenses that they are claiming.

To do this, in the child's file, please select the new option "Alberta working parents benefit" added in the Child-Care keyword group. Then, for the keyword ALBERTA-WPB , select "Yes" and the program will deduct the amount of $561 from the total child care expenses for that child, in Part A on page 3 of Form T778.

Taxpayers who have already filed their 2020 income tax return

If the taxpayer has already filed their 2020 income tax return, they must request an adjustment to their income tax return by reducing the amount entered on line 67950 of Form T778, and the amount on line 67954 if applicable, by the total amount of the Working Parents Benefit.

    2. Suggestions made by clients during the 2020 Synergy conference that were implemented in DT Max T1 version 24.20

      1. Permanent carryover of efile confirmation of a representative's authorization forms

Since the electronic filing of the federal form for the authorization of a representative and of the Quebec MR-69 is required only once (not required annually), could the program permanently carry over (to each year) the efile confirmation of these two forms, to allow preparers to know in which year the electronic filing occurred?

Starting with the 2020 tax year, confirmations of the electronic filing of the federal authorization form and the Quebec MR-69 will now be permanently carried over to future years.

Regarding efile confirmations obtained in a previous year, if you want to carry over this information permanently to future years, please add it manually first in the data entry for 2020 as follows : add the keyword Progress , select the option "CRA Authorize/cancel representative - submitted", and enter the original efiling date. If applicable, repeat the same steps for the Quebec MR-69 form. This information will now be kept and carried over to future years.

  3. New diagnostics
